Bulletproof MCT Oils
What are MCT Oils?
First things first: Bulletproof MCT oils are pure, triple-distilled quality fats that give you more energy, better mental performance and fewer cravings.
“MCT” stands for “medium-chain triglycerides.” MCTs contain fatty acids that naturally occur in coconut oil, palm oil, goat milk and breast milk.
Your body turns MCTs into molecules called ketones, which help burn fat, curb cravings and power your brain. TLDR: Ketones give you incredible energy.
That said, not all MCTs are the same. Brain Octane oil gives you four times more ketone energy than coconut oil. That means you get more brain-powering, fat-burning power than you would with generic MCT oil.
Here’s a closer look at what that means:
- C8 (caprylic acid): This is Brain Octane oil, and it’s the all-around best MCT for ketogenic energy. It produces more ketones than coconut oil, which means more ketone benefits like amplified energy, fat loss and metabolic burn.
- C10 (capric acid): Supports energy, fat burning and metabolism, but doesn’t produce as many ketones as C8 does. Bulletproof MCT Oil is a blend of C8 and C10.
- C12 (lauric acid): AKA what you’ll mostly find in coconut oil. Your body doesn’t treat C12 like an MCT, and it doesn’t produce as many ketones.
Bottom line: C8 and C10 are the best types of MCTs overall, whether you follow the keto diet or just want more energy. Bulletproof only uses C8 and C10 MCT oils. That matters.

The difference between Brain Octane oil and MCT oil
Brain Octane oil is C8 MCT oil. It’s the most ketogenic fatty acid in coconuts, purified and distilled into one versatile oil.
MCT oil is a blend of C8 and C10 MCT oils. It’s more affordable than Brain Octane oil, and it meets Bulletproof’s rigorous quality standards for purity.
To support energy, brain power and fat burning: Go with Brain Octane oil. It’s pure C8, which produces more ketones than MCT oil does.
For pure, budget-friendly MCT oil: Go with MCT oil — you won’t get as big of a ketogenic boost, but you’ll still burn fat, boost energy and curb cravings
MCT oil vs. coconut oil
Coconut oil is great for cooking and baking — but if you want fat-burning, brain-powering ketones, MCT oil is better.
That’s because coconut oil mostly contains C12 (lauric acid). C12 doesn’t produce the same ketogenic effects as C8 or C10, like increased energy and fat burning.
Plus, Brain Octane oil and MCT oil are liquid at room temperature, and they don’t taste like coconuts. Instead, they enhance the flavor of tons of foods. You can use these flavorless oils in pretty much anything, from Bulletproof Coffee to salad dressings.
How Bulletproof MCT oils are made
Purity matters when it comes to MCTs. Bulletproof uses triple-steam distillation to make the purest, most stable product possible. That means what ends up in your bottle is pure MCT oil and nothing else.
The Bulletproof process is unique because it’s completely free of solvents and chemicals. Solvents and catalysts are cheaper to use in MCT oil production, but they don’t give you the same quality product.
Brain Octane oil and MCT oil are manufactured in the United States, sourced from imported coconuts — which are more sustainable and environmentally friendly than palm kernel oil.
FIND YOUR FAVORITE MCT OIL
IS IT ORGANIC?
When you buy organic, you want something that contains zero GMOs, pesticides, and hormones. Good news: You won’t find that junk in Bulletproof products.
But when it comes to MCT oils, organic isn’t the whole story. Some companies will try to tell you that organic is always the best. Here’s the truth: Because of the way organic MCT oils are made, they can’t fully isolate C8 — the fatty acid you want for maximum ketone energy.
Yes, an organic MCT oil may have a certification on the label, but it’s a fundamentally different product. It might contain leftover coconut residue and allergens. It might taste like coconuts. And it won’t give you as much ketone energy.
Bulletproof Brain Octane oil and MCT oil have more ketogenic MCTs than plain coconut oil. That means your body will produce more ketones. Our MCT oils don’t taste like coconuts. And they don’t contain any leftover coconut residue because they’re tested for product purity.
The bottom line: Brain Octane oil is literally a bottle of pure C8 MCT oil and nothing else. You don’t get that same guarantee with an organic MCT oil.

How to use Brain Octane oil and MCT oil
Bulletproof MCT oils are flavorless, so you can add them to just about everything. Start with 1 tsp. and build to the full 1 Tbsp. serving over several days so your stomach stays happy.
Try Brain Octane oil or MCT oil in salad dressings, drizzled over vegetables or blended into smoothies or your morning cup of Bulletproof Coffee. Here are some of our favorite recipes.
Organic is great. But when it comes to MCT oils, you want purity and C8 for the greatest benefits. Bulletproof Brain Octane oil and MCT oil are purer than organic MCT oils. Here’s what that means.
In order to call an MCT oil organic, companies have to keep everything as it was in nature. During production, manufacturers keep the coconut oil intact and filter it down to try and isolate the MCTs.
The problem? C8 is a tiny fraction of coconut oil. Manufacturers can only filter out so much, and there’s a ceiling on the amount of C8 and C10 left in the final product. And because the oil is filtered and not distilled, there’s a chance organic MCT oil will still contain coconut residue, potential allergens and coconut flavor.
Bulletproof MCT oils are different — we fractionally distill and isolate C8 and C10 out of the coconut using water, pressure, and heat in a clean environment. We don’t use any solvents or chemicals, and we test the final product for purity and high potency.
The end result is a more effective MCT oil.
Brain Octane oil and MCT oil contain high-purity C8 and C10 without any of the residual coconut material, leftover coconut flavor or unwanted fatty acids that you might find in organic MCT oils.
We want to give you the best MCT oil possible. We’re willing to pass up on the organic sticker if it means we’re giving you a more potent product.
This is a little like comparing apples to oranges. Coconut oil and MCT oil are both awesome, but they have very different uses.
Coconut oil primarily contains an MCT called lauric acid (C12), which has some immune system benefits. Use coconut oil for baking and cooking up to 350°F.
Brain Octane and MCT oil are distilled to isolate C8 and C10, the most ketogenic MCTs. You’d have to eat a lot more coconut oil to get the same ketone energy as Bulletproof MCT oils.
Use Bulletproof MCT oils when you want to boost your ketones, supplement your diet with quality fats and upgrade your meals and beverages with fat-burning, brain-powering fuel.
If you haven’t used MCT oil before, you might experience stomach upset or diarrhea. Start with just a teaspoon (or even less) to give your body time to adjust.
Yes, you can cook with MCT oil in recipes up to 320°F. Here are some ideas:
- Use it to make pesto, salad dressings and sauces
- Blend it into hot and cold beverages like coffee and smoothies
- Drizzle it over your favorite dishes as a finishing touch
Did you know? Oil accentuates fat-soluble flavors. Brain Octane oil and MCT oil give your meals an extra kick of fat-burning, brain-powering fuel.
Studies show that MCTs create ketones, which cause your body to burn fat and calories, regardless of your diet.
Yes. MCT oil taken at night won’t keep you awake. Instead, it’ll rapidly convert into ketones, which fuel your brain while you sleep.
Not at all. However, some people struggle to eat enough high-quality fats to stay in ketosis. Plus, C8 MCT oil — what you’ll find in Brain Octane oil — is a powerful way to efficiently boost your ketone levels and stay in ketosis.
No. The term “MCT oil” can refer to four different strains: C6, C8, C10, and C12. Brain Octane oil is C8 MCT oil, the most ketogenic part of coconut oil.
High-quality MCT oil is a powerful way to upgrade your brain. That’s because C8 MCT oil turns into ketones within minutes. Ketones quickly cross the blood-brain barrier and can be used as a fuel source for brain cells, giving you steady energy.
Brain Octane oil and MCT oil allow you to stay in ketosis and help curb cravings so you can fast longer.
